Dear All
With the arrival of warmer weather the woods are busy. Woodland flowers such as Lesser Celandine, Spurge, Bluebells, Wood Sorrel and Wood Anemones are everywhere and Gorse creating a show in the cleared areas on the East side. If you take a moment to smell gorse flowers you'll find a strong scent - of coconut! Take care though, Gorse is extremely prickly.
The birds are in fine voice. The Songthrush is my current favourite since my Mum recently pointed it out to me and now I'm hearing them everywhere in the woods. My Mum lives in Hampshire and she says there are very few left thereabouts so she was particularly delighted to hear it here when visiting. The first Chiff chaff was heard on 23/3/12 and that's a really easy one as it says it's own name - a photo of a chiffchaff is shown. A list of all birds seen in the wood is being compiled and updated as the year goes on so if you see or hear anything let us know. To see the list click here.
The woods are also busy with people. The number of visitors increased around the Easter break, including walkers, cyclists, horse-riders, geocachers and those simply wishing to sit in the woods with their friends.
Sadly some left a great deal of litter and more upsetting still, vandalised a nesting site and picnic bench. However the majority of woodland visitors came and went and enjoyed without leaving a trace.
Next month it is again our AGM and time to renew your membership. We will be contacting you with details in due course.
